Our name reflects our commitment to people-centred justice.
Our Mission
At hūmānus, we are an international human rights organisation dedicated to confronting the root causes of injustice, amplifying the voices of victims of mass atrocities, and pushing for systemic change. Our work is grounded in accountability, dignity, and the power of survivor-led justice.
Founded by a global team of experienced advocates, international lawyers, and frontline organisers, hūmānus directly supports survivors of genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, displacement, and repression. Our approach is deeply collaborative: we listen first, act with integrity, and always follow the lead of those most affected by harm, ensuring a truly survivor-centred approach.
We work to bring justice to victims before both international and national courts, facilitating legal accountability efforts through strategic litigation support and meticulously building evidence for justice via human rights documentation and investigative work.
Our services extend beyond traditional legal forums; we partner with communities to design holistic strategies that centre their dignity, safety, and goals. This includes vital work in memorialisation, truth-telling initiatives, reparations for survivors, and systemic reform. We firmly believe justice must be tangible and rooted in lived experience, not solely in legal theory.
Our Impact
Our Reach
Our work spans continents—from Southeast Asia to East Africa and the Balkans—unified by a mission to advance inclusive, survivor-led, and transformative justice.
We achieve this through strategic litigation, meticulous documentation, impactful advocacy, and robust movement support, always in collaboration with local actors.
hūmānus also serves as a vital platform for innovation in human rights advocacy. We actively build cutting-edge tools, cultivate extensive networks, and form strategic coalitions that bring new energy and approaches to addressing enduring challenges of impunity. We are committed to supporting those who bravely challenge injustice and advocate for fundamental change—not only in courts and parliaments, but also through media and the broader public consciousness.
Our Approach
Our Name
The name hūmānus (“of and for the people”) reflects our profound commitment to humane, kind, and people-centred justice. We strive for a justice that actively restores humanity, instead of eroding it. In all our efforts, we work with deep humility, honouring the inherent leadership of survivors of atrocities and the immense bravery of communities tirelessly demanding accountability.
