We make sure justice is not limited by borders.
International Courts and Accountability Mechanisms
We represent victims of serious international crimes – war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity – before all major accountability mechanisms, including the International Criminal Court, UN bodies, and under universal jurisdiction. Victims’ interests are too often side-lined in these complex processes.
Our team ensures our clients’ voices are consistently heard, their rights are protected, and their role as central parties is fully recognised. We advocate relentlessly over the long term, making sure victims are not overlooked and that they receive the justice, recognition, and reparations they deserve. Our approach is client-focused, rights-driven, and grounded in international legal excellence.
We are experts in conducting complex investigations into violations of international criminal law, offering experience across all stages of fact-finding and evidence gathering. Our team brings together skills in witness and victim interviews, analytical review, and advanced data management to deliver a clear, comprehensive picture of our clients experiences and the legal pathways available to them. Whether supporting international prosecutions, preparing submissions, or advising on legal strategy, we tailor each investigation to the unique needs of our client’s and what serves their interest.
Our expertise ensures that clients are not only heard but that their pursuit of justice is grounded in robust, credible, and well-documented evidence.
Investigations
Civil Proceedings
We have expertise in civil proceedings and business and human rights, advising clients on how to hold companies accountable when they have contributed to serious harm. Our team assesses legal options for seeking compensation and accountability, identifying the most effective strategies across jurisdictions.
We work closely with trusted counsel worldwide to ensure that cases are pursued effectively, always putting our clients’ needs and interests first. From corporate accountability to human rights redress, we are committed to making sure justice is not limited by borders or corporate structures.
Among the strategic tools that hūmānus uses to support its client-focused and rights-driven advocacy, are the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)’s Complaint Mechanism, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)’s Whistleblower program, and the U.S. Department of Defence (DOD)’s ex gratia payments process.
Under the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises on Responsible Business Conduct, complaints can be filed through a non-judicial avenue to hold companies accountable for violating the Guidelines. Under, the U.S. SEC’s Whistleblower Program, organizations and individuals can report when companies are concealing human rights abuses that impact corporate investors, and the SEC is then able to investigate, fine violators, and issue financial awards to whistleblowers.
Finally, through the DOD’s ex gratia payments process, the U.S. can provide payments to civilians harmed by U.S. military operations around the world. These, among other tools, allow hūmānus to promote accountability, justice, and reparations using new and creative avenues.
Alternative Mechanisms for Redress
Mediation and Dialogue
We prioritise mediation and dialogue as powerful tools to secure the best outcomes for our clients. Formal accountability processes for victims of serious international crimes are often slow, limited, and unable to fully meet survivors’ needs. That’s why we seek alternative solutions, using creative approaches to deliver meaningful justice, recognition, and redress. We are unafraid to engage with all necessary actors — from governments, military, UN bodies or anyone else to help our clients achieve their goals.
Whether through mediation, negotiation, or peacebuilding efforts, we remain focused on finding practical outcomes that address the needs of our clients.
